SP Molecular Surveyor

Displays published malaria drug resistance markers over time and location of molecular markers on found in P. falciparum dhfr and dhps genes.

Sulphadoxine pyrimethamine (SP) is the recommended intermittent preventive treatment (IPTp) against malaria infection for pregnant women and SP + Amodiaquine is the combination used for seasonal malaria chemoprophylaxis (SMC).  Because these two preventive treatments are now being widely deployed, there is renewed interest in the level of resistance to these antimalarials. This SP Molecular Surveyor displays the prevalence of molecular markers associated with resistance to SP found in Plasmodium falciparum malaria parasite by year and location.

The data used to populate the surveyor are freely available, and the complete file can be downloaded for further use.

A recent publication on ‘Geographical spread and structural basis of sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine drug-resistant malaria parasites’ used data from this database.

The tool provides clear and standardised visualisation of the evidence to inform key international, regional and national monitoring strategies to protect pregnant women in malaria endemic regions against further spread or emergence of resistance to SP.

SP Molecular Surveyor

  • Displays the distribution of resistance markers found associated with reduced efficacy of SP from across 62 countries
  • Summarises data from 65,283 samples and 180 different publications
  • Uses flexible default settings that can be altered easily by the user
  • Allows the user to explore the data by molecular marker type, by country  and by time period, using filter options on the left-hand bar
  • Discover other visualisations of the same data that allow the user to explore the temporal trends and compare two different sites of interest in more detail are available below the map
  • Download the full data set.
