Microscopy for the detection, identification and quantification of malaria parasites on stained thick and thin blood films in research settings

Author:
Research Malaria Microscopy Standards Working Group

WWARN researchers have worked together with a group of experts convened by the UNICEF/UNDP/World Bank/WHO Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR) to develop a manual for microscopy for the detection, identification and quantification of malaria parasites on stained thick and thin blood films in research settings

The manual is intended to help researchers working in drug or vaccine efficacy trials or in diagnostics to deliver consistent and reliable data and to promote standardisation in reports.

U need information about methods of malarial parasites quantification

Dear Dr Oluwasesan,

Thanks very much for your feedback.

As mentioned in Section 4.5.7 of the ReMMS Manual, we recommend that the calculations of parasite density should be done using computerised tools to reduce the possibility of errors.  The formulae for use in parasite density calculations are also detailed in the same section.

I hope this helps. Please do let us know if you have any further feedback.

would like to get more knowldge on malaria quantification

Dear Okojia,

There is a detailed explanation of malaria parasite quantification from stained blood films on pages 21-24 of the microscopy manual. Please let me know if you have any further questions on parasite quantification.

Many thanks,

Aileen.
