Inside the WWARN Explorer preview
Use the WWARN Explorer preview to view data examining complementary aspects of antimalarial drug resistance:
- Treatment outcomes and measures from clinical trials of drug efficacy.
- Pharmacological profiles of antimalarial drugs across key target populations.
- In vitro assessment of drug susceptibility of parasite isolates.
- Molecular markers of parasite resistance.
Careful statistical analyses have been performed on the shared data to allow for comparisons. For more information on the data visible in the WWARN Explorer preview, see our Methodology page.
Navigating WWARN Explorer
The information on WWARN Explorer can be customised by antimalarial and/or filtered by geographic region, data type, parasite species and time. The time slider allows users to display studies performed during a particular time period, for example 1985-2010. As a default, WWARN Explorer displays all studies available for viewing.
Selecting antimalarial(s) & the effect on map markers
Different shaped map markers - one for each data type - are used to locate individual studies on the map. In all data types apart from Clinical, a blue map marker indicates that the selected drug treatment is included in that study. For Clinical data, the map marker will appear green, yellow or red depending on the average Day 28 cure rate (adjusted by PCR) for that study.
Filtering data
Data type
There are four data types in WWARN Explorer: Clinical, Molecular, Pharmacology and In vitro. Some studies may include more than one data type. By default, all studies are visible. By selecting one or more data types, the displayed studies can be limited to those that include the chosen data types.
Region
If you select a region of interest, WWARN Explorer will zoom into that area. Only studies conducted in the selected region will be visible.
Time
The time slider allows users to display studies performed during a particular time period, for example 1985-2010. Only studies performed during the selected time period will be visible.
Investigating a study
Hover the cursor over a map marker to view limited study information. Click a map marker to view a study summary. To learn more about that particular study, click on 'Investigate study', a pop-up box will appear with additional details.
Study data by country
The 'Study data by country' section displays the results visible in the WWARN Explorer in a tabular form. Click a column to sort by that heading.
Experimental features
Motion charts for clinical data
A new feature is being trialed in the clinical studies performed in Uganda and Thailand. Dynamic motion charts have been created to illustrate the Day 28 cure rate data across multiple years. The size of the bubbles on the chart corresponds to the sample size. The color of the bubble indicates the type of antimalarial(s) used for treatment. Hover over a bubble to view the study site, day of treatment, antimalarial(s) and the year the study was finished.
