The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is a leading university dedicated to promoting health worldwide through advanced biomedical research, graduate-level education in the life sciences and health professions, and excellence in patient care. Founded in 1864, UCSF is the only campus in the 10-campus University of California system devoted exclusively to the health sciences. Its graduate schools in Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing and Pharmacy consistently rank among the nation’s top five schools in their fields, while its extensive biomedical research is world-renowned and garners the largest funding from the National Institutes of Health of any public institution. The campus also operates the premier UCSF Medical Center, which provides world-class care and serves as a training ground for the university’s health professionals.

UCSF has been involved in a number of research, public health and operations programs to combat malaria worldwide. Among those, the Makerere University - UCSF Research Collaboration was established in 1998 with an initial focus on clinical and molecular studies of malaria with a focus on antimalarial drug therapy. The research group has completed 19 clinical trials involving over 10,000 patients, 9 different treatment regimens, and 9 sites in Uganda. In addition, UCSF collaborations have completed numerous molecular biology studies involving the genotyping of malaria parasites and evaluating the role of molecular markers of drug resistance in clinical response to therapy.
