Will you be attending either BioMed Central’s Challenges in Malaria Research conference, or the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine’s Biennial Meeting, this month in Oxford?  We’ll be at both conferences and look forward to meeting with you to exchange ideas on how we might work together soon.  Join our sessions to hear our latest results, new study groups and partnership ideas.

Come to our sessions - read on to find out more:

Wednesday, 24 September at 13:15 Factors affecting Drug Efficacy in Clinical Trials

Thursday, 25 September at 14:30 Key findings on the efficacy of artesunate-amodiaquine treatment regimens for uncomplicated P. falciparum malaria

Friday, 26 September at 14:30 To share, or not to share data, that is the question

At Challenges in Malaria Research, WWARN will be hosting a lunch time discussion focused on the factors that affect drug efficacy in clinical trials. Join us on Wednesday, 24 September at 13:15 together with Prof Feiko ter Kuileⁱ, Dr Bernhards Ogutu ⁱⁱand Dr Christian Nsanzabana, Scientific Group Coordinator at WWARN. The session will provide an opportunity to discuss the key issues influencing drug efficacy, such as, drug dosing regimens and the recent efforts to validate new molecular markers of resistance.

It is essential that the underlying factors driving resistance are studied collaboratively to strengthen treatment strategies and support the global fight against antimalarial resistance,” says Christian Nsanzabana. “This lunch time discussion is a great opportunity to explore the latest clinical response results and discuss how they might be used to inform and influence global strategies to manage the spread and emergence of resistance.”

In recent years, the concept of open data sharing has gained momentum within the research community. However, scientists are often reluctant to share their hard-earned primary data, even after initial publication. At this year’s Royal Society of Tropical Medicine’s Biennial Meeting, Prof Philippe Guérin, WWARN’s Director, will talk about the controversial issue of data sharing in a presentation entitled: ‘To share, or not to share data, that is the question’. Prof Guérin’s talk will take place on Friday, 26 September at 14:30.

Dr Christian Nsanzabana will be also presenting key findings on the efficacy of artesunate-amodiaquine treatment regimens for uncomplicated P. falciparum malaria. This will begin at 14:30 on Thursday, 25 September

You can also meet the WWARN team during poster presentations to discuss the highlights from some of our pooled analyses. We’ll share results from our multi-disciplinary Study Groups that have worked together to answer important questions on antimalarial resistance, as well as highlighting the key factors influencing the gaps in available data on the quality of antimalarial treatments. Check out the poster programmes for both events nearer the time.

We hope to see you soon. If you’re not able to join us – read our latest news or email info@wwarn.org with your questions.
